Cedar Hills is built on an alluvial fan that was a shoreline of Lake Bonneville, a bench the first settlers simply called The Bench. Dry farming failed there, and the ground was used for grazing and turkey ranching until subdivisions arrived. The town had 571 people in 1980 and about 10,000 by 2010, so nearly every home dates from 1995 to 2012: two-story stucco-and-stone houses with full basements, many of them walkouts on the slope.
The slope is steep. The city golf course at the mouth of American Fork Canyon drops about 750 feet from its highest green to the river. That gradient moves water fast across the bench in a storm or the melt, and it moves it into the uphill window wells and against the uphill foundation walls first. Cedar Hills sits downstream of the Grove Creek and Battle Creek debris basins, rebuilt in 2019, which handle the canyon side but not the water that lands on a lot.
